Our History
The Colombian rural population, guardian of the forests and jungles, waters and animals, lives far from the centers of urban development. To get to their homes it is necessary to leave the main roads, follow the course of the rivers and climb the tops of the mountains.
Do you know what rural families read? Do you know if they have books? Do you know how rural children study? Do you know how rural teachers are trained? Do you think there are good libraries in rural schools?
Secrets to tell Foundation was born in 2004 from these questions.
At the time, we explored rural areas to find out what books were available in rural homes. We discovered that there was almost no printed material in the homes rural families living in out of the way parts Antioquia; therefore, there was limited access to knowledge and the possibility of approaching the book as an object. We also visited schools and found that libraries had little material, that the vast majority of rural schools only covered up to 5th grade and that teachers received very little training. We understood many things, but especially that the Colombian countryside deserved urgent attention regarding access to knowledge and education.
We decided to create an educational project that would think, write and design strategies, contents and training workshops to meet the needs and interests of rural inhabitants and contribute to their individual and collective development.
